How to prep your hair before heat

A blow-dry or a flat iron goes better when you start with the right base. Here’s the order to do it in.

Heat styling gets a bad name, but how you do it matters as much as how often. A little preparation gives you a smoother result and fewer passes with the iron.

Before the blow-dryer

Towel-dry your hair and let it air-dry for a few minutes if you can. Apply a light amount of Gold Re-Set to your mid-lengths and ends, comb it through and start drying. Point the nozzle down the hair, from root to tip, to help it lie smooth.

Before the iron

Make sure your hair is fully dry before a flat iron or curling iron touches it. If you’ve just washed it, dry it first. On dry hair, use a tiny amount, because a little goes further than you’d expect.

Turn the temperature down

Use the lowest setting that gets the job done. Fine and color-treated hair usually needs less heat than thick hair. One slow pass is better than several fast ones.

After styling

A very small amount on the ends, warmed between your palms, will calm flyaways. Don’t overdo it, or you’ll flatten the style you just created.
